What age group are the classes for?

StrumTree guitar classes are designed for retirees and over-50s who want to fulfil their lifelong dreams of learning and playing the guitar, however all adults are welcome to join in too!

Our weekly 60-minute guitar classes are held in community spaces around Canberra. Each class is tailored and focused on what the group would like to achieve, such as the songs people want to learn, special themed workshops, community music activities, and even performance opportunities!
Playing a musical instrument in a group setting will have so many benefits for your mental and physical health. It is also a safe, non-judgmental environment to practise guitar. By joining StrumTree, you will be making friendships and connecting with a community of other musicians just like you, who want to grow in their guitar confidence to create music and perform songs. You will also:

Beginners
Classes

Our Beginners Class is ideal if you want to start guitar from scratch. From the first lesson you will learn easy chords to play fun songs.

What you will learn

  • Start from scratch with easy chords and simple songs from your first lesson
  • Learn essential strumming patterns and basic guitar techniques at a relaxed pace
  • Build enough skills to play a variety of songs and join a group performance

Intermediate
Classes

Our Intermediate Class is ideal if you are confident changing between open chords, know a few strumming patterns, and like learning at a faster pace.

What you will learn

  • Improve chord changes and expand your strumming patterns
  • Build a repertoire of popular songs, including sing-alongs
  • Develop your technique with introductions to fingerpicking and solo playing

StrumTree Guitar Ensemble (Advanced)

Our StrumTree Guitar Ensemble class is suitable for more advanced students who are confident with the basics of sight-reading guitar music notes.

What you will learn

  • Play together as a group, learning duets, melodies, and harmonies
  • Build a repertoire of classical and contemporary ensemble pieces
  • Strengthen your reading skills and perform as part of a coordinated group
